Die deutsche Opposition gegen die NS-Herrschaft hat in ihren verschiedenen Gruppierungen spätestens seit 1938 versucht, Gesprächspartner und Verbündete im Ausland, nach Beginn des 2. Weltkrieges auch im gegnerischen Ausland zu finden; die zum Teil unorthodoxen Annäherungsversuche bei den Alliierten waren jedoch ein Fehlschlag, die "verlassenen Verschwörer" blieben Fremde im eigenen Land, Verdächtige im Ausland, am Ende mußten sie sich eingestehen, daß nur eine militärische Niederlage die Befreiung von der Diktatur bringen konnte. Der für deutsche Zeitgeschichte kompetente, in den USA lehrende Autor stellt zum 1. Mal diese bisher nur in Einzelaspekten untersuchten mannigfachen Kontaktversuche (vgl. "Großbritannien und der deutsche Widerstand 1933-1944", ID 35/94) im Zusammenhang und im Kontext der deutschen Widerstandsgeschichte dar, ein vorzügliches, für den Gesamtkomplex wichtiges Buch.
