Sarah Entwistle (geb. 1979 in London, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) ist fasziniert von der Formbarkeit und Umdeutung von Materialien. Diese sind in der Praxis der Künstlerin sowohl architektonischen – sie bedient sich im Sinne der Arte Povera an gefundenen Metallobjekten von Schrottplätzen – als auch biografischen Ursprungs. So beschäftigt Entwistle sich seit Jahren intensiv mit der Aufarbeitung und Demontage des Archivs ihres verstorbenen Großvaters und Architektenkollegen Clive Entwistle (1916–1976), den sie nie kennengelernt hat. Das Archiv, bestehend aus nicht realisierten Entwürfen und persönlichen Unterlagen, enthüllte Clive als einen komplexen Menschen mit vielen Gesichtern, dessen esoterische Ader seine professionelle Entwurfspraxis stets durchzog. Die Auseinandersetzung mit gefundenen Materialen ist für Entwistle ein Mittel, um ihre eigene Identität als Architektin, Künstlerin und Frau zu evaluieren. Sie entwickelt aus ihnen heraus Objekte und skulpturale Stillleben, die Elemente wie großformatige, handgewebte Wandteppiche, gefundene und umgestaltete Metallabfälle, Keramikobjekte und Arbeiten auf Papier assemblieren. Die ausdrucksstarke, handgefertigte Einzigartigkeit der einzelnen Elemente steht im Gegensatz zu den reproduzierbaren und zweckmäßigen Prototypen des High Designs. Dieser Prozess der Verwandlung und Deutung ist Entwistles poetischer Versuch eines kreativen Umgangs mit der eigenen Herkunft und Biografie. Junk Own legt Entwistles sensible Praxis offen. Die Monografie zeigt Werke der letzten 5 Jahre und ist durchzogen von zahlreichen Archivstücken aus dem Erbe des Großvaters, begleitet von fiktionalen wie kultur- und kunsthistorischen Texten zur Arbeitsweise der Künstlerin. |
