Das Werk von Thomas Zipp (geb. 1966, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) ist geprägt von der Auseinandersetzung mit den Widersprüchen von Individuum und Masse, dem Ich und dem Kollektiv. Zipps OEuvre umfasst neben komplexen Installationen und Performances auch Malerei, Zeichnung und Skulptur. Mit Einzelausstellungen im Fridericianum Kassel, Teilnahmen an der Biennale di Venezia, der Berlin Biennale und Gruppenausstellungen in der Tate Modern London, dem New Yorker MoMA und dem ZKM Karlsruhe, zählt Zipp zu einem der bedeutendsten Vertreter der Gegenwartskunst. Für seine Ausstellung in der Kunsthalle Gießen (2018) schaffte Zipp eines seiner markant-düsteren Raumszenarios, das die Ausstellung The Family of Man (1955) neuinterpretiert. Mischte die zu Weltruhm gekommene MoMA-Präsentation Alltagsfotografie mit künstlerischen Arbeiten unter der Prämisse der globalen Völkerverständigung, so bündelt Zipp die einst separierten 32 Themenkomplexe der Menschheit in einer multimedialen Installation. Er lässt die Besucher*innen durch eine im Maßstab 1:1 nachgebaute Siedlung laufen, die zwischen vertraut Alltäglichem und Endzeitstimmung changiert, vor allem aber die Brüchigkeit gemeinschaftlicher Verabredungen und Konventionen offenbart. Zipp kreiert eine Welt, in der sich zeitliche und räumliche Dimensionen aufheben und Vergangenes, Gegenwärtiges, Zukünftiges und Mögliches sich zu einem künstlichen System verdichten.
